Week #3 Advent Devotions for Families with School Age Children & Youth

Week 3 - Three CandlesTHIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT:

 Opening Prayer:

Gracious God, as we draw closer and closer to your coming, these candles and branches remind us of the frailty of life.  The branches grow dry and brittle.  We are reminded that all living things need water for sustenance. Water washes us clean and makes us new in baptism. We are made your children.   Help us repent, forgive us our sins, and make us new.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Listen to the words of the Prophet Zephaniah:

Sing aloud, O daughter Zion, shout, O Israel!  Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem!  The Lord has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies.  The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more.

Candle Lighting:

Speak these words while lighting the first, second, & third candles:
O God, rejoicing, we remember the promise of your Son.  As we light these candles, we remember our baptism.  We are reminded that you came and removed judgment and oppression.  Give us the ability to extend grace and forgiveness.  Help us to be tolerant and open-minded toward others.  We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Your High’s & Low’s for the day.

Read:

Luke 3: 7-18

Talk:

How does the Gospel relate to our High’s & Low’s?

Pray:  Heavenly Father, help us to rejoice in the knowledge that you are loving and forgiving.  Just as you made John the Baptist a messenger proclaiming your coming, so too make us messengers of your word. Strengthen us to offer grace and forgiveness to others, just as you have blessed and renewed us.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Bless:  Child of God, baptized and renewed, proclaim God’s coming. He is near!

WEEK 3 NIGHTLY DEVOTION:

Gracious God, we light three candles knowing that your son’s birth is near.  Your messenger proclaims your coming.  Open our hearts to accept your forgiveness and renewal.  Empower our voices to proclaim your coming.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Candle Lighting:

Speak these words while lighting the first and second candle:
O Key of David, Jesus Christ, the gates of heaven open at your command, come and show us your mercy.

I spent most of my life living in the great Pacific Northwest (Oregon). I went to college in South Carolina. I have also lived in Arkansas, North Carolina, kind of Virginia, Texas, & currently Pennsylvania. I’m a single-mom of two amazing children (aka – “The Things”) who keep life very interesting! I’m a pastor-in-training. The snark is fiercely strong with me! #Javaluia #VivaMoreCoffee
