Week #3 Advent Devotions for Families with Small Children

Week 3 - Three Candles

THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT DEVOTION:

Opening Prayer: (Pray – Peat/Repeat Style)

Gracious God, you send Jesus to bring peace to the world and to teach your children.   Help us to bring peace and light to others.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Listen to the words of the Prophet Isaiah:

Read: God’s Peaceful World – Pg. 172 from the Spark Story Bible. (Or similar story from your favorite Story Bible)

Candle Lighting:

Speak these words while lighting the first, second, & third candles:
O God, with joy as we light these candles, we remember your peace and love.  Help us love and serve others.  In Jesus name we pray.  Amen.

Share:

What’s something that happened today that made you happy?  What’s something that happened today that made you sad?

Read:

Zechariah – Pg. 208 from the Spark Story Bible (Or similar story from your favorite Story Bible)

Talk:

  • What’s something you thought was interesting in the story?
  • Zechariah sang to people about Jesus coming.  What song would you have sung to tell the world about Jesus?
  • Sing a song or two that remind you of Jesus’ coming. (Ex: Away in a Manger)

*It’s amazing how answers change from one day to the next… it’s often fun to write down responses in a family journal and read them back at the end of the week.*

 Pray:  (Pray – Peat/Repeat Style)

Heavenly Father, help us to be happy knowing that you are loving and forgiving. Make us messengers of your word, just like Zechariah and John and others before them.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Bless:  Child of God, bring peace and light to others, proclaim God’s coming. He is near!

WEEK 3 NIGHTLY DEVOTION:

Opening Prayer: (Pray – Peat/Repeat Style)
Gracious God, we light three candles knowing that Christmas is very near.  Your messengers tell the world that you are coming. Make us messengers.  In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Candle Lighting:

Speak these words while lighting the first and second candle:
O Key of David, Jesus Christ, the gates of heaven open at your command, come and show us your mercy.

I spent most of my life living in the great Pacific Northwest (Oregon). I went to college in South Carolina. I have also lived in Arkansas, North Carolina, kind of Virginia, Texas, & currently Pennsylvania. I’m a single-mom of two amazing children (aka – “The Things”) who keep life very interesting! I’m a pastor-in-training. The snark is fiercely strong with me! #Javaluia #VivaMoreCoffee
